Password Security 101

What actually makes a password strong

A few simple habits stop the vast majority of account break-ins. Here is what matters most, in plain language.

Length beats cleverness

A longer password is stronger than a short complicated one. Aim for at least 16 characters, or four or more random words.

Random beats memorable tricks

Pet names, birthdays and keyboard patterns are the first things attackers try. Truly random passwords have no pattern to find.

One password per account

Reusing a password means one leaked website exposes all your accounts. Every account should get its own.

Passphrases are your friend

Several random words, like maple-comet-lantern-sage, are both very strong and much easier to type than symbols.

Use a password manager

Nobody can remember dozens of strong passwords. A manager remembers them for you, and we can help you set one up.

Turn on two-factor

Two-factor authentication means a stolen password alone is not enough to get in. Enable it on email and banking first.

How It Works

Strong security in four steps

01

Generate

Create a strong random password or passphrase with the tool above.

02

Copy

Copy it straight to your clipboard with one click.

03

Store It Safely

Save it in a password manager, not a sticky note or a text file.

04

Add Two-Factor

Turn on two-factor authentication for a second layer of protection.

One password per account. No exceptions.

Strong, unique passwords plus two-factor stop the vast majority of account break-ins. We can help you get there.

Questions

Password security, answered

Is it safe to use an online password generator?

This one, yes. The password is generated entirely in your browser using cryptographic randomness. It is never sent over the internet, never stored, and never visible to us or anyone else.

Do you store or see the passwords I generate?

No. Everything happens on your device. If you refresh the page, the password is gone forever unless you copied it somewhere safe.

How long should my password be?

We recommend at least 16 random characters, or a passphrase of four or more random words. Length is the single biggest factor in password strength.

Should I use a random password or a memorable passphrase?

Both are excellent. Random character passwords are ideal when a password manager fills them in for you. Passphrases are great when you have to type it by hand, like a computer login or Wi-Fi.

What do the bits in the strength meter mean?

Bits of entropy measure how many guesses an attacker would need. Every added bit doubles the guesses. Around 60 bits is strong for most uses, and 80 or more is excellent.

Do I really need a password manager?

If you have more than a handful of accounts, yes. It remembers strong, unique passwords for every site so you do not have to. We can recommend one and set it up for you or your team.

Can you help my business with password security?

Yes. We set up password managers for teams, enforce strong password policies, enable two-factor across your accounts, and train your staff, so one leaked password never sinks the business.
